As your local Thousand Oaks moving and storage provider, we have seen our clients
move a variety of items over the years. Keep in mind here at Russell’s we are happy to help
accommodate any type of move that you require. However, if you have looking to move a boat
to your new home yourself there are several things that you will want to keep in mind. First off
if you simply have a kayak or a small canoe these items can likely fit inside the moving truck
alongside the rest of your items comfortably. If your boat is 22ft or less follow the steps listedboat
below during your relocation process.
 Plan Your Route: The wider and longer that your boat is, the harder it is to navigate
while driving. Be sure to keep in mind the terrain and time of year that you will be
driving. These are important to ensure the safety of your drive and the safety of other
drivers on the road.
 Determine the GCVW (Gross Combined Vehicle Weight): This is the total weight of the
boat, trailer, and the vehicle towing it. This weight will help to ensure a safe journey.
 Prepare Vehicle: Be sure to do a thorough once over of your vehicle that will be towing
the boat. Make sure that all your brakes, headlights, wipers, turn signals, etc. The trip is
likely to give your vehicle a run for its money so it is very important that you rule out
any major issues that could pop up.
 Batten Down the Hatches: There are three specific locations you need to attach your
boat. The stern on both sides of the boat and at the point of the bow all need ratchet
straps.
 Electrical: If your trailer exceeds 3,000 pounds then it will need its own brake system.
Make sure that you check your trailers electrical system so that you can be sure all brake
lights are properly working.
