Everyone knows that moving is a stressful time for most people. What some people fail to consider is that moving can be an even more stressful time for our pets. They must, after all, adjust to new sights, sounds, smells and other pets and animals in their new environment. So, because we know that as a concerned pet owner you wish to make your pet’s transition to your new place a seamless one, we offer you the following tips from the experts.

  • Bring your pet’s favorite belongings: Although you may be tempted to start over with all new things in your new home, this is not a good idea when it comes to your pet’s favorite items. Bring your pet’s favorite bed, crate, toys, food and water dishes, treats and other familiar items to your new place and put them where they were in your old home. These items contain familiar scents and markings that will help put your pet at ease.
  • Explore safely: Take your dog for frequent walks in your new location and explore the neighborhood with it. This way your pet will learn the new sights, scents etc. of his new “territory” in a controlled environment. A word of caution here: Be sure your dog is on a leash as you are doing this and that you familiarize yourself with local leash and dog licensing laws.
  • Give your dog time to decompress: Let your dog explore your new place but don’t over-stimulate it. The new environment can be overwhelming and even scary for your dog especially if it is shy by nature. Be patient and let it get used to its new setting.
  • Keep your dog’s routine the same: Dog’s are big fans of routine. As you are adjusting to your new home, try to keep your dog’s feeding time, potty breaks, walking schedule, etc., the same as they were in your old home.
  • Beware of escape attempts: Some dogs will try to run away in a new environment. (We resisted the urge to say that they will try to flee.) Keep your dog under close supervision for the first few months after moving. If you are very worried your dog may escape or get lost in his new environment and have not already done so, consider implanting him with a microchip.pets
