You’ve been planning for months, donating items, carefully packing precious items, and then sitting on some boxes to get them closed while your partner tapes it closed. Moving day is the culmination of all your hard work and we know you want it to go as smoothly as possible. Having your survival kit on hand with your essentials can help make your day and the next few days as easy as possible. Here are a few items we recommend having in your kit, our experience is your tool.
The documents- Everything from your passports to your pets medical records should be within reach at all times. Knowing where this paperwork is during your move and as you unpack will help you avoid the headache that comes as you have to update all these documents with your new address. Of course, you can always get ahead and start the processing of information earlier if you have the time.
Bathroom Basics- Toilet paper, shampoo, toothbrushes, soap and the rubber duck for the kids should have their own bag. Moving can be a sweaty ordeal and you will want to make sure everyone is clean at the end of the day. Make sure to also have lots of clean towels in an easy to find box. One way to do this is to use masking tape to make a big X on the top and sides, making it easy to pick out among your belongings.
First aid kit- Accidents happen when moving and bandaids can stop the tears of children of any age. In addition to first aid basics, put your medication here too, especially ones that need to be taken on a daily basis. Having everything in a safe place and out of reach of the kids means that if that headache does come up, you can be prepared.
Snacks- Everyone will need a snack and it may be that making a trip to the grocery store just doesn’t happen your first day. Granola bars, dry cereal, and fruit make for easy to eat snacks that everyone can enjoy. If you don’t want to bother with cooking the first day or two, consider finding a local spot to order takeout from. No dishes and little mess.
